ASPULL & THE OSTRICH
An Ostrich has been a heraldic symbol of Aspull Village for over 600 years. Aspull Urban District Council chose it as a symbol because since 1371 it has appeared on the coat of arms of the Earl of Crawford, who later occupied Haigh Hall and became the chief landowner in Aspull.
The bird has a key in it`s mouth because it was believed to be capable of eating iron and so became a symbol of strength.
